Story boarding and animatic development

Been flat out with this recently - trying to visualise the whole film and get it to read is one difficult task. I've been planning potential pan shots to help with the narrative. I was working in Digicel Flipbook at first to story borad as I like drawing with bitmap rather than with vector line work as its better to sketch with.  But have switched to story board pro for it panning features. Its just easier to work with and I just want to get it down right now and stop being so fussy.

I've been revisiting me concept painting too, trying out potential pan shots. I sketched the bottom of this in yellow by coincidence but actually quite liked the way it looked so I continued it in more detail.

my animatic is becoming quite detailed but its really helping me imagine the overall look for the film. Plus with never really worked on backgrounds with this much detail before so I'm kind of exploring my abilities at the same time. I should save it for the actually backgrounds themselves but I'm now starting to think I can really base them on the animatic layouts if need be. In some case I will need to for the sake of the time of the pan shots.

I rough them out quite loosely first and then layer more detail as the image and my intent becomes clearer. I make it sound like I'm making it up as I go along!

Script Visuals

Here are some first initial sketches on paper visualised from the script, I've deliberately exaggerated some of these drawing to help establish some character

 Ben
Ben in Bed - Drawing potential shots for the film is making the script a bit more exciting

I've no idea what the spider is going to look like at this point.

 Ben Again
Ben and George armed with Umbrella and Cricket Bat

 George Face expressions
 Ben

Quite like these sketches of Ben and George and what to take them further.

More potential shots from the script - Ben hanging over the top bunk talking to George, like my brother used to do with me!

Ben and George Design Progress

Here are some first design sheets for Ben and George that I have been working on. They're pretty loose and are in the style of my more recent drawings, which is helping me loosen up and experiment a little more. They are only ruff and colourless right now as I'm just playing with Ideas. However, I'm pretty set on both Ben and George having big afros as distinctive features or characteristics.
The above sketches was the starting point the ones below. I began by trying to created interesting shaped heads some not necessarily for the characters but just to exercise the idea.
With the sketches of ben below, I've focused a bit more on creating a drawing structure that could help me draw the characters from different angles with different expression whilst keep them looking the same. This should ultimately help me animate them.
I've turned some of the drawing from the expression sheets into colour drawings as these are the ones I'm most happy with so far. Although the squiggly hair looks good, its not going to do me any favours when animating so I'm no doubt going to have to simplify the hair for George a bit like I have for Ben.

Cecil Kim - Concept painting

Been looking at a lot of concept art recently and seeing how its a useful way to create visuals for an idea. I've been looking at concept art from Games in particular - God of War on PS3 has some amazing concept art by a digital artist called Cecil Kim. His painting are mostly landscapes but look like screen shots from the game, so they clearly inform the end result. The game is dark and mythical and his painting really reflect this. Check out some of his work below, but for more samples visit his website.

Bible Overview and Script (revision)

‘Webbed Lights’

The Premise
Keep out of sight under those webbed-lights!

Theme
Bravery

Synopsis
George refuses to believe big brother’s tales of giant street spiders that hide amongst the trees and above the streetlamps at night, preying on cars and late night joggers. So Ben dares George to sneak out of bed in their pyjamas and walk up to the bridge and back if he doesn’t believe him. Despite being scared stiff of his stories, George is eager to prove to Ben that he is no chicken, and that giant spiders aren’t real. Equipped with just an umbrella, a cricket bat and one torch will Ben and George make it down the road to the bridge and back, or will they become the prey of the night crawlers.
Treatment
Ben and George are in already in bed but they’re not asleep yet. Ben Starts telling George tales of giant spiders that come out at night and lurk in the shadows above the street lights; preying on cars and late nightwalkers.
George gets scared as he begins to imagine Ben’s tale vividly but then refuses to believe him. Being eager to prove that he isn’t lying, Ben dares George to go outside if he doesn't believe him and walk down the road to the bridge and back. George immediately says no at first, but then to Ben’s surprise he suddenly agrees to go in hope that Ben might stop calling him a chicken.
Equipped with just one Torch, a cricket bat and a large umbrella, they sneak out of the house. Ben leads the way down to the bridge with the torch and George follows closely behind him. They’re both frightened now but Ben tries to hide it - He asks George if he‘s ready to turn back yet but George puts on his brave face and pushes him to continue. As they reach the bridge, there is less and less light and it becomes really dark. Ben starts to panic while frantically shining the torch around the grand arch of the bridge until he drops the torch
Suddenly Ben cries with fear and immediately turns to run back up the road to the house, leaving George alone and more frighten than ever! George cries out for Ben as he runs off but he doesn’t look back. George quickly picks up the torch off the floor and shines it above him with his umbrella ready, trying to get a glimpse of anything he can. He sees something moving but can’t quite make it out. Just then, a van approaches and it’s full beams light up the entire bridge revealing nothing but a shredded bin-bag above him, which is caught on the bridge and blowing in the wind. George is bewildered at first but then becomes hugely relieved. He pulls himself together and heads back for the house.
Back at the house Ben is hidden under his covers, still quite shaken up. Just then George creeps into the room and jumps back into bed, startling Ben. Ben suddenly appears from the covers relieved to see George back in one piece. Ben immediately asks if George is ok and starts firing questions at George trying to find out what happened. Suddenly with his wits about him, George starts describing a giant Bridge spider more vividly than ever and how he was left to fend him off. Ben listens intensely but then eventually says that he doesn't believe him. George then proclaims that he could have seen it all for himself had he not been such a chicken!
